How Does Digital Printing Work?

A digital press uses the same basic technology as your business laser printer or office copier, however it prints at a much high resolution by using a finer toner. The toner is a plastic resin powder which has been negatively charged. The toner is fused to the paper when it goes through the fuser unit on the press. The end result is a high quality image which is very comparable to traditional offset printing.

What is the different between a Quick Copy Shop and a Full Service Printer?

There are two major differences. First many of the quick copy shops use lower end copiers and/or digital presses which are not of the highest print quality. Second, a place like OfficeMax or Kinko’s/FedEx do not have onsite bindery services. For example, if your full color brochure has the printing going to the edge of the paper (known as “full bleed”); the document needs to printed on an oversized sheet and then cut down to size. This requires a cutter. In addition, if the brochure gets folded, you want to either score or crease the sheet before folding so there isn’t any “cracking” of the paper.

How Do You Select the Right Digital Print Company?

You will have the best experience and get a cheap price on you postcard or brochure project by dealing with a commercial printer who has incorporated digital presses into their operation. Their advantages are the following 1) Their production facilities are running 10 to 16 hours or more per day; 2) They have full bindery capabilities (drilling, folding, etc); 3) They have dedicated prepress staff to review your artwork, which will assure you a quality end product; and 4) their businesses are setup to provide fast turn-around on short run printing projects like post cards, perfect bound booklets and full color catalogs.
