Looking for Magazine Printing Companies

magazine printing companiesFinding good magazine printing companies for your project can be difficult. Many websites advertising print services for magazines are either brokers (reselling someone’s services) or are an overseas company.

The problem with using a broker/reseller is they have minimal control of the actual production. Printing a magazine or any other material is customized to your particular needs. This includes: size of the piece, type of paper to use for the cover and inside pages, protective coating for cover, mailing and distribution services, etc. Also change process for a magazine project can be difficult at times. It requires a 3 party communication process. Lastly, a broker is marking up the cost. In most cases you are paying more for the project versus working directly with a printer.

Printing overseas is not a real economical option, taking into account shipping cost, the amount of time to get actual pieces produced, etc. In addition, labor and material costs have gone up over the last 5 to 10 years. An overseas printing company is no longer cheaper than an American printer.

You best option is to find a US based print company for your full color magazine. Search on the internet and find at least 4 companies based in the United States. When you are looking at their websites, look for pictures of their building, equipment and people. Check on Google maps that there physical location shows up. If you need mailing services, make sure they do the work in-house. Next, call the companies and talk to a sales representative and explain your needs and ask for a quote. If you don’t like the conversation or the follow through with providing you a detailed quote, do not use that particular organization….your “gut” reaction is always right! Lastly, ask for customer references. You should talk to at least three of their customers.

Once you pick the printing company for your magazine, review the total project with them. Many times an experienced company will give you a lot of feedback that will save you time and money. For example, if you are doing direct mail with your magazines, the weight of the paper will be important to save on postage. You might be thinking 80# gloss text when 70# might save you 10% on postage based on the weight of the piece. You also want to discuss timeline for print production, hardcopy proofs versus electronic proofs, payment terms, etc.

It is not hard to find the best magazine printing companies with a little bit of effort on your part. Today’s technology makes the process much easier to work with a national print company.
