We Weren’t First in Second City

EBA Printing has been helping the Chicago printing industry since 1959. However, Chicago’s printing trade began over a century ago before EBA had the pleasure of working with the community. Currently, EBA Printing is proud to offer a wide range of products, low pricing and friendly service to our clients. It is our quality equipment and extensive experience which set us apart from our competitors. However, we can attribute our current successes to the city itself for developing the industry when it first started.

History of Chicago’€™s Printing Commerce

Chicago became a center for commercial printing in the late 19th century, second only to New York. At this time, printers worked closely with catalog and magazine publishers. Workers had easy access to rail transportation and achieved competitive positions because Chicago was the city in which shipping rates for bulky printed products increased. In the years following World War I, Chicago’s place in the printing industry developed into a regional concentration greater than that of the bigger eastern cities. By the end of the 20th century, four out of the 10 largest printing companies in the world had headquarters within 100 miles of Chicago.

The rapid, early growth of Chicago meant that in 1846, there were already four newspapers and eight printing offices, making it the region’s printing center. Between 1850 and 1870, the city developed a fully united printing industry. Newspapers from 1860 reported 29 printing offices while the 1871 census reported 79 job printers besides the newspaper offices.

Although Chicago was never a major city for literary publishing, its location was vital in trade publishing and direct-mail sales from the 1860s to the present. Beginning in the 1920s, Chicago’s versatile, large plants and its competitive edge in shipping rates lured major magazine companies away from other regions, factors that continue to dominate the printing industry in Chicago. Currently, industry giants like Rand McNally and Donnelley built their successes on printing textbooks, phone books, maps, magazines and catalogs; some of these products were printed locally but most were put into production in Chicago for publishers outside of the city.

We continue to be the company that Chicago printing and advertising campaigns turn to for superior quality printed products at affordable rates. At EBA Printing, we are humbled to be able to be a part of Chicago’s rich printing history. From the Sears Tower to Chi Town, we are proud to offer brochures, booklets, magazines, catalogs and flyers, among a variety of other products, to all of our customers.
